Hello February 16th out guiding Curlews from Florida and McGreary's of Georgia.
Highlights: - Black-backed Woodpeckers ( 2 females ) on the McDavitt Rd in Sax Zim Bog. - American Three-toed Woodpecker ( female ) 3 tenths of a mile south of the woodpecker area on McDavitt Rd. Look for a blow down area and bark scraped off the trees on the east side. Also the woodpecker area on McDavitt is marked with stakes and red ribbons so birders can find the trails to walk in. - Boreal Chickadees ( Admiral & Arkola feeders ) - Hoary Redpoll ( Admiral Rd feeder ) - Hawk Owl on the farmstead on the north side of the RR tracks on McDavitt Rd. - Snowy Owl ( # 27 ) on the bay ice out from ( Superior, Wisconsin ) Barker's Island near marina. * Found a dead Boreal Owl on Highway 61 at mile post 11. I will give the owl to Hawk Ridge ( Debbie Waters ) This area is about a 1 1/2 miles of where a live owl was seen on Saturday Feb. 14th. hopefully its not the same owl. - Great Black-backed Gull at Canal Park on the breakwall. - 2 Glaucous Gulls at Canal Park on the breakwall. February 17-19th Guiding Garey & Linda Harritt of Oklahoma and Max & Lynn Jarrett of Arizona. Highlights: --Black-backed Woodpecker ( female ) McDavitt Rd - Hawk Owl along Hwy 61 near Larsmont Rd. in Lake Co. Feb 19th. And also along McDavitt Rd ( same bird as above ) - Spruce Gouse on Feb. 18th along Lake County Rd 2 at the intersection of Kane Lake Rd. - Snowy Owl ( Barker's Island in Superior Wisconsin ) - Boreal Chickadee, Hoary Redpoll, White-winged Crossbills at the feeders in Sax Zim Bog. February 20th Guiding ( day 1 out 2 ) with Ty Smedes of Iowa Highlights: -Black-backed Woodpecker ( male ) McDavitt Rd in Sax Zim Bog -Am. Three-toed Woodpecker ( male ) McDavitt Rd in Sax Zim Bog -Hoary Redpoll ( 1) and (3-4) Boreal Chickadees at the Admiral Rd feeder. Also a Boreal Chickadee along Arkola Rd feeder. -Snow Buntings along CR 7 near Byrnes Greenhouse - 2 Rough-legged Hawks (1) near the intersection of CR 7 & CR 28 and (1) along the Stone Lake Rd ( CR 319 ) -Hawk Owl along McDavitt Rd. Mammal sightings this week: -Gray Fox -Fisher -Coyote -Snow Shoe Hare * Also on Feb 14th a festival participant photographed a moose in the bog! * Boreal Owls and Great Gray Owls are very VERY hard to locate and so far its been nearly a week since a Great Gray Owl was sighted in Sax Zim Bog or anywhere in NE Minnesota. The last Boreal Owl sighting was Saturday Feb 14th and that bird most likely gone. * Crows are more abundant in the Sax Zim Bog area and Ravens are pairing up in the bog. Also Rough-legged Hawks are moving northward so it has to be Spring right? * Heard a Great-horned Owl out my window on Feb 23 at 2:30am. Good birding!
