I have seen Huns (Gray Partridge) in several places around Dakota County and
elsewhere in the state, but I have never found them to be dependable. In
fact, I have always considered that even knowing where they were being seen
was of little help in finding these "cuties". But, today I joined several
other birders waiting at 180th and Joan watching a bare snow covered field.
And, as promised, right at dusk, eight Huns flew in and started running
around and diving into the snow to feed. They would run a few feet and
burrow down about four inches into the snow so they mostly below the snow.
After a few minutes they would pop out and run and dig in again. They were
completely unconcerned with the proximity of our cars. Shortly before they
flew in, we walked around the hedge, finding only the tracks were they had
flown and run into the hedge. The only othere birds around the area were a
pair of Red-tailed Hawks and flocks of Horned Larks feeding along the road.
