A brief, impromptu birding session with Steve Baker, a fellow clinic volunteer from The Raptor Center, yielded some nice results: a young eagle on the nest, viewed from the observation platform at Old Cedar; a few red-tail hawks on the wing; and just west of the airport, a merlin. The merlin was perched in a small tree on the median, on the south side of 494, very close to Refuge headquarters. It appeared to be sunning itself, facing south with feathers fluffed.
