Between 8 and 8:30 AM this morning I observed three White-winged Crossbills feeding on the cones of a small spruce tree on the east side of Lake of the Isles. They were fairly tame, feeding within a few yards of joggers, dogs, etc. and I was able to get good looks. They were all males and looked "dirtier" than Sibley - the white wing bars were not as broad. the dark auricular patch was bigger and the belly had grey-black patches. Their bills looked very long and slender. The spruce where they were feeding is located on the west side of Lake of the Isles Parkway, just south of 26th St. near Uptown Minneapolis.
