Hi everyone, While searching for redpolls today in Waseca & Steele counties with John Hockema, (we found them in both) we found White-winged Crossbils in both counties!
In Waseca Co. we found them along CR 57, a little ways south of Hwy. 14 on some U of M property on the west side of the road. There were some spruces behind a few U of M farm buildings which we drove behind and checked out. In this area was the Richard Anderson wildlife area, which I had never known about. There were 3 males & 2 females. In Steele Co. we had crossbills just south of Owatonna. Following CR 45 south out of Owatonna, take a left onto CR 60 and continue east. Go past where this road intersects with SE 14th Ave, and check the spruces on the right. About 20+ birds were in the easternmost windbreak and they didn't seem to be going anywhere. There was a mix of both sexes. Also of note today- 2 Greater White-fronted Geese at Loon Lake in Waseca Cackling Geese at both Loon Lake in Waseca and Lake Kohlmeier in Owatonna Red-shouldered Hawk, east of Waldorf along CR 4 We also saw Northern Shrike, American Coot, Ring-necked Duck, Lesser Scaup, Redhead, Rough-legged Hawk and Northern Harrier. Our winter-finch mojo has carried over into the spring season!!! Good birding!
