About 3 weeks ago we had a partially albinistic redpoll mixed in with the 50 or
60 coming to the feeders. It initially got my heart racing because a white
appearing bird with the common redpolls had me hoping for a hoary. The bird had
a white head except for pale pink where the usual red in the "poll" would be.
The white extended only slightly onto the the chest where normal appearing
streaks began, dashing my hopes... It also had very pink feet and legs with
very noticably black claws/nails. We tried to get a picture through the window
with one of the kids cameras, but the picture doesn't do the bird justice. So,
still looking for the hoary but enjoyed the unusual "common"! Also interesting
was that this bird did not seem to suffer from its unusual color in terms of
pecking order... It chased several of its peers from the area where it was
foraging under a feeder.
