Stories from the Avian Tree of Life

by Professor Scott Lanyon, U of M Dept of Ecology

Long thought to be beyond the reach of science, the avian tree of life (the
genealogy for bird species) is now being revealed at an astonishing rate
through the work of museum scientists and molecular biologists. My colleagues
and I have been working on one major branch of the bird tree, that containing
the New World Blackbirds, New World Sparrows, New World Warblers, Tanagers, and
Cardinals.

In this talk I'll give a little background on how we discover genealogies that
cover tens of millions of years, describe why understanding this genealogy is
important to science, and provide glimpses of some of the implications of this
research.
