A black-crowned night-heron (first I've seen this year) returned to
the usual roosting spot along the Minnehaha Creek outflow from L.
Hiawatha.
It was there at about 4:45 and 5:15 this afternoon, hidden in the
spruce cluster just north of the pedestrian path (just west of 28th
Ave. S). I could only see a single adult bird (without disturbing it).
Last year the first I saw at that spot was on 4/11.
On another topic, this was immediately after the hail storm front
passed. I had a little "Hawk Ridge" experience over L. Hiawatha:
raptors were kettling and soaring on the back side of that northward
moving front. I could identify several bald eagles, red-taileds, and
what I'm pretty sure was a Cooper's hawk. Also flocks of tundra swans
passing by in straight line flights.
