Birders coming to Northwest Wisconsin
 
      Birdwatchers from all over Wisconsin and beyond will be coming to Siren, 
Wisconsin in May for the 70th  annual Wisconsin Society for Ornithology (WSO) 
Convention.  The  convention will be headquartered at The Lodge at Crooked Lake 
in Siren.  On Thursday and Friday, May 21 and 22, there will be all-day field 
trips north and south of Siren.  Convention activities begin at The Lodge at 
Crooked Lake on Friday, May 22, with registration 4:00 - 7:00 p.m.  At 4:00 
p.m. the WSO Bookstore will open, and the Friends of Crex Meadows Wildlife Area 
will have an informational display and items for purchase.  On Friday evening 
at 7:00, Jim Hoefler will give an introduction to Crex Meadows,; at 7:30 p.m. 
Ryan Brady will give an overview of the Marshbird Monitoring Project.  These 
presentations will be followed by a field trip to Crex Meadows, 8:00 – 11:00 
p.m. 
 
      Saturday morning, May 23, and Sunday morning, May 24, convention 
registrants may participate in field trips to destinations in the area:  Crex 
Meadows Wildlife Area, Fish Lake Wildlife Area, Namekagon Barrens, St. Croix 
River, Bird Banding with Bruce Bacon, and -- on Sunday only -- Wisconsin Point 
near Superior.
 
      The WSO Annual Meeting will be at 12:00 noon on Saturday.  At 1:00 Scott 
Hull will give a presentation: “Wisconsin Sharp-tailed Grouse 2025—Conservation 
Success Story or Lost Cause?”
 
      The 5:00 Saturday evening Convention Banquet will be followed by a 
presentation of awards.  At 6:30 p.m. Andy Paulios and Bruce Bacon will speak 
about “Nightjars in Wisconsin” (Common Nighthawks, Whip-poor-wills, and 
Chuck-will’s-widows).  At 7:00 p.m. convention attendees may choose one of two 
field trips:  1) banding Nightjars, or 2) birding Crex Meadows Wildlife Area.
