"I'm an early bird and I'm a night owl, so I'm wise and I have worms." - Michael Scott, The Office -----Original Message----- From: Wisconsin Birding Network [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Debbie Waters Sent: Sunday, April 05, 2009 1:01 AM To: Wisconsin Birding Network Subject: [wisb] Burnett County, Crex Meadows , 4/4/09 Hi folks, Had a relaxing spring afternoon of birding at Crex Meadows today--I love to sit and watch ducks almost as much as raptors. :-) The ice has really receded since a friend was there on Monday-most water is almost completely open and the waterfowl is starting to move in. Today everything was pretty concentrated in the flowages in the southern half of Crex. A lot of Canada Geese and Mallards, plus a liberal sprinkling of Ring-necked Ducks. I managed to scrape up a few handfuls of Green-winged Teal, two pintails, two coots and one Pied-billed Grebe. We nearly always had at least one Rough-legged Hawk in view, plus there were a lot of Northern Harriers (all close enough to age were adults) and Bald Eagles. We watched two balds (one adult, one immature) working the waterfowl pretty tenaciously on Phantom Lake in the late afternoon. A stooping Bald Eagle is really impressive! And of course a Merlin had to get in on the action, harassing the eagles. Cranes aren't really plentiful yet. While I didn't keep count, we definitely saw less than two dozen. Swans were more plentiful--a few dozen at least, but since I didn't bring my scope I could only make positive ID's on the closer ones, and all of those were trumpeters. Oh, and my first Western Chorus Frogs of the year. Now I KNOW spring is here!
