Tonight the sun was still above the horizon when I got home, so I finally nailed up flashing around one of my trees that hold a wood duck house. I also pounded in a couple of stakes to straighten one of my free standing houses. Three of my five houses were hosting squirrels when I last checked, a couple of weeks ago. I have yet to clean them out. I checked the first of my free standing houses which I had just straighten. The house shows no evidence that the ducks have been in visiting. This weekend I will add some dry leaves to the wood chip bedding. I looked at the other house and noticed that some down was hanging in the entry hole. This looked more promising and I was hoping to find some eggs had been laid inside. I set up the ladder and unlatched the door and pried it open a little. I saw plenty of down and a brown wing. I quickly closed the door and quietly backed away. This is the first house that I have oppened with out freightening the hen off the nest. While I assume that she is probably a Wood Duck, both the Woodies and Hoodies use my boxes. This weekend I will check out the squirrel boxes to see if I can clean any of them out.
