Salt Lake Birding Weekend 2009 is only a week away. This is a great opportunity to explore one of the best areas of the state for unusual species. This event has a long and rich tradition going back to 1975. I encourage everyone to take advantage of this opportunity to visit this unique area on the western edge of the state. Last year, despite the 10" of fresh snow on Friday, 141 species of birds were identified. In recent years American Avocet, White-faced and Glossy Ibis and Little Gull have been seen, but many other rarities are possible. Volunteer guides will bring birders to a variety of hot spots in Lac Qui Parle and southern Big Stone counties. In addition there will be a presentation by Lisa Gelvin-Innvaer, Regional Non-Game Wildlife Specialist from the DNR office in New Ulm, at the dinner on Saturday night at the Sons of Norway Hall in Madison.
