Thursday, April 23rd at 7:30 pm at REI Is Too Much Nitrogen a Bad Thing?
By Daniel Hernandez Assistant Professor, Biology Dept, Hamline University Nitrogen is an essential element to sustain life on Earth. Although it is required for almost every biological function, nitrogen is in scarce supply in natural ecosystems. Human activities have greatly increased the amount of available nitrogen in the biosphere, with profound consequences for the health of humans and the environment. Nitrogen pollution is often a factor in environmental problems such as biodiversity loss, invasive species, and habitat degradation. Nevertheless, nitrogen pollution receives relatively little attention in environmental policy debates. This talk will review the human impacts on the nitrogen cycle, its consequences for ecosystems, and discuss some research into efforts to mitigate the effects of nitrogen pollution. ******************************************** MRVAC meetings are free and open to the public.
