Inspired by the adventures of Mssr. Bartkey and Hockema, I decided to head over
to Steele County Sunday, and I turned out to be a good trip! The highlight came
right away, with 33 American Avocets hanging out in the small wetland just west
of the park entrance on Cty 19. The pond was pretty crowded, highlighted by:

33 American Avocets
9 Willets
3 Wilson's Phalarope
Several Yellowlegs of both sp.
Waterfowl included, American Wigeon, Canada Goose, and Blue-winged Tea.

Rice Lake SP:

2 Western Grebes
1 Snow Goose
1 Horned Grebe
4 Red-breasted Mergansers
Missed on the Red-necked Grebe, but did hear Marsh Wrens and saw a few
Forster's Terns

Flooded field entrance just east of park entrance:

2 American Pipits

Straight River Marsh:

8 Wilson's Phalarope
3 Willets
2 Redhead (!)

Sadly, no Hudsonian

Back in Winona, at the Verchota Landing:

5 SB Dowitchers (I was watching with Dedrick Benz, and we base this on a call
uttered by one bird)
1 Solitary Sandpiper
1 Dunlin
1 Northern Waterthrush
the usual Yellowlegs and a Semipalmated Plover

Good Birding
