Observed a female towhee this morning with a small number (~7) of white
spots on her back and wings.
I'm presuming this is simply an Eastern, but wondered about the variance
between Eastern, Spotted and hybrids. Sibley's Spotted and hybrids have
smaller and more numerous spots, and he does mention that Eastern can have
more spots than just the one on the scapular.
Thoughts? Experiences?
11 warblers on Blue Hill Trail, Sherburne NWR this morning - new for year
were Northern Parula and American Redstart - had to work for them, however,
and small waves were still predominately Yellow-rumped. On the negative
side, still a bit of a slow & late migration - on the positive side, this
could make Saturday's MOU trip very exciting if the waves break then (like
last year)!
Good birding.
