Derek:

The site is good for established species. The ranges are more up to date,
including rarities such a Green Violetear and expanding species such as
Ringed Kingfisher. Sibley's web site has dots for Green Violetears in
places I had never imagined this species had been seen. On the other hand
the web site does not show Green Jays in areas of northern South Texas where
they have been seen for the past several years. Still, a web site can be
updated at much less cost than coming out with a new edition of a field
guide. The site did not have information for one-time rarities such as
Masked Tityra http://www.greglasley.net/maskedti.html, seen in mid February,
1990, and Social Flycatcher, see in mid January, 2005,
http://home.earthlink.net/~pomarine/id39.html . Sibley didn't list the
tityra in the 2000 edition of his North American field guide. With those
details in mind, don't necessarily expect to find the latest rarest bird on
Sibley's web site. It is a useful adjunct to paper field guides. It would
not be surprising to see "smart phone" users accessing this site in the
field.

Thank you for alerting folks to another useful tool, Sir!

Onward!

The Sibley Guide to Birds is now online. Looks fairly complete.

Please contribute your sightings to our list; it is only as good as members

Also, please report your bird sightings to eBird and/or the IOU/MOU. The
information gathered is vital to the future of birds.
