While there hasn't been anything that unusual over the past couple weeks in Carver County, there was a Pine Siskin in some pines in northwest Chaska the other day. This was the 1st I have seen since early May. Back in June there were 3 Henslow's Sparrows at Carver Park, but yesterday it was back to only 1. Similarly, I did not see or hear any Cerulean Warblers compared to the 3 that were still at Carver Park in late June. It took until July, but yesterday I saw my first American Woodcock(2 actually) of the year. Blue-winged Warbler have been more scarce this summer, though numbers in May seemed normal.
While there have not been any migrant shorebirds returning south(later than last year) there were a few American Black Duck at Chevalle wetlands in Chaska the other day. There was also a Black Duck/Mallard hybrid. Surrounding the wetlands, the Yellow-headed Blackbirds were feeding young and a couple of Grasshopper Sparrows had joined the usual Savannah Sparrows. These are the first Grasshopper Sparrows I have seen in this area. Unfortunately, some of the area that both the Grasshopper and Savannah Sparrows prefer will be developed as soon as the housing market picks up. I checked the Red-necked Grebe nests last week and unfortunately it looks like 2 of the 4 nests may have failed. They looked like they had washed out. There was still 1 nest occupied. There was a pair of Grebe that I am fairly sure were successful but they were too far away for me to confirm. From the distance I was looking from, it looked like there was a chick riding on the parent's back. Recently fledged young seen include Pied-billed Grebe, Downy Woodpecker, Black-capped Chickadee, White-breasted Nuthatch, Chipping Sparrow, American Robin, Eastern Bluebird, Tree, Barn Swallow, Great Crested Flycatcher, and American Redstart. _________________________________________________________________ Insert movie times and more without leaving HotmailĀ®. http://windowslive.com/Tutorial/Hotmail/QuickAdd?ocid=TXT_TAGLM_WL_HM_Tutorial_QuickAdd_062009 ---- Join or Leave mou-net:http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives:http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html
