Today I saw what looked like a couple of Sanderlings along the distant shore of
Fedji Lake in far NE Watonwan County. I hesitate to say for sure since it
would be a first county record and they were quite far away. What I did see
was a lot of white on the wing when they flew briefly and a lot of white on the
body as they scurried along the shoreline like Sanderlings do. From the boat
ramp on the north side of the lake look straight across to a sandbar that
sticks out into the lake. That's where I saw the birds late this afternoon.
If anyone goes there tomorrow, let me know what you find.
There were also a lot of shorebirds around the corner from there at Bergdahl
Lake but I didn't see anything unusual.
Finally, I found a very nice bunch of shorebirds at a large mudflat just south
of Perch Lake in NE Martin County(SW of Truman). If you take the gravel road
that goes along the south shore of Perch Lake look on the south side of the
road and you will see a large open area. I found 2 American Golden Plovers, 1
Short-billed Dowitcher, several Stilt Sandpipers, at least 1 Baird's, 1
Pectoral and several Least Sandpipers, 1 Greater and several Lesser Yellowlegs,
and of course many Killdeer.
