Clearwater County, November 2

At approximately 8:00 AM I witnessed the flight of a mixed flock of
tundra and trumpeter swans from Minerva Lake into Upper Rice lake WMA.
The only way to pick them out was the vocalization. There were obvious
young tundra swans flying with or near several adults and the birds were
grouped in clumps of their own species but it was an obvious choice to
fly with and intermingled with the other species. They passed over me as
I stood on the pass between the two lakes and at the closest they were
20 feet above me. I watched a little with my 7X35 binocs but could not
pick out any of them with the yellow lores but the difference in their
vocalization was pronounced and remarkable. Has anyone else seen (or I
should say heard) these birds in mixed flocks? Jim Fitzpatrick
