This morning I went up to the Superior Landfill, to drop off some old furniture used at Hawk Ridge this past fall (free comfy chairs on the side of the road), and it was my first time inside a landfill. So after we unloaded the soaking-wet chairs, I got the binocs out and did a quick scan. Within a few minutes I had:
Ring-billed Gull 80 Herring Gull 200 Thayer's Gull 1 Iceland Gull 1 Glaucous Gull 1 Thayer's Gull adult (inside landfill) http://www.pbase.com/birdfedr/image/119668757 Iceland Gull juvenile (inside landfill) http://www.pbase.com/birdfedr/image/119668760 Glaucous Gull juvenile (inside landfill) http://www.pbase.com/birdfedr/image/119668744 After scanning the landfill, I headed over to the Superior Entry to scan for gulls in the rain. Here's from about 20 minutes of scanning: Ring-billed Gull 40 Herring Gull 150 Iceland Gull 1 Great Black-backed Gull 1 Great Black-backed Gull http://www.pbase.com/birdfedr/image/119668754 http://www.pbase.com/birdfedr/image/119668759 Iceland Gull (very dark!) http://www.pbase.com/birdfedr/image/119668787 http://www.pbase.com/birdfedr/image/119668784 Here's a likely Thayer's Gull. This bird looks like a classic juvenile Thayer's Gull with the slightly darker wing tips and and smooth and overall uniform tertials with little mottling. While at Wisconsin Point observing that dark juvenile Iceland Gull, I did not observe the bird in this photo. After the juvenile Iceland Gull could not be found, I located this individual. I thought I'd put this photo out there, just to make sure this is a true Thayer's Gull. http://www.pbase.com/birdfedr/image/119669455 Special thanks to Sarah Glesner for re-finding that BARROW'S GOLDENEYE yesterday in Duluth. Here' my best photo of the bird http://www.pbase.com/birdfedr/image/119670548 Tomorrow morning I'm heading back home to Wisconsin. Thanks for all the fun times in Duluth this past fall :) Good birdwatching, Erik Bruhnke Duluth, MN NATURALLY AVIAN - Guided bird hikes and bird photography www.pbase.com/birdfedr [email protected] ---- Join or Leave mou-net:http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives:http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html
