Bernie Friel has the cover photo of National Wildlife magazine Dec/Jan 2010 
issue.  He won First Place in the annual NWF photo contest in the Birds 
category for amateur.  This is the 39th annual contest and about 70,000 images 
were submitted, the largest number ever.  His photo captures a male indigo 
bunting in flight.  

The contest covers seven subject areas with both a pro and amateur division. 
The chances of a winning photo are about 1/5000 if each subject pool was equal 
and if pro and amateur were equal in number.  I am sure though that many more 
non-pros submitted.  I am also guessiing that "birds" were probably 
overrepresented.  superlative.  All the winning images can be seen at::
