I birded around the county this afternoon and found a few interesting things. On Aitkin County Road 18: a BARRED OWL at 2.2 miles east of Highway 169, a GREAT GRAY OWL at 3.8 miles east of Highway 169 (2/10 ths miles west of 320th place - Pietz's Road), two GRAY JAYS right at the junction of C.R. 18 and 320th place, a NORTHERN HAWK OWL three telephone poles to the east of the junction of C.R.18 and C.R.5. On C.R.5: 2 NORTHERN HAWK OWLS sitting on consecutive telephone poles at 2.8 miles south of the junction with C.R.18.(This was a bit of a surprise). Two miles east of Highway 169 on C.R.56 on the rice paddies: several hundred TUNDRA SWANS , PINTAIL DUCKS, MALLARDS. Other birds seen include several small flocks of COMMON REDPOLLS, 2 flocks of SNOW BUNTINGS, 5 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, 2 BALD EAGLES, RAVENS.
