So far as of today there are now 45 Northern Hawk Owls reported in Minnesota. The latest reports came from Sax Zim Bog with a Northern Hawk Owl seen on corner of Owl Avenue .5 miles north of Admiral Rd which was seen today by John Quinn. I saw a Northern Hawk Owl yesterday just west of McGregor on the north side of Hwy 210 in spruce bog habitat and the other was on Hwy 200 just east of Hill City at the intersecton of 200 & 250th Ave on the north side of 200.
Great Gray Owls: A owl is off and on seen on McDavitt Rd roughly 3.0 miles north of CR 28 ( Sax Rd ) in Sax Zim Bog. Another Great Gray Owl just NW of the "Bog" on CR 230 and Sailor Rd seen today by John Quinn and in Aitkin Co. along CR 18 just 1/4 mile east of 320th Pl. on the north side of the road. There has been at least 2 Great Gray Owls seen along CR 18 between CR 5 and Hwy 169. CR 18 is north of the town of Palisade and you need to take CR 5 from Palisade to reach the east side of Great Gray Owl area and also keep an eye out for Hawk Owls ( at least 3 ) were seen near the intersection of CR 5 and CR 18. Since the storm many side roads may of have to be plowed. The Hedbom Logging Rd just west of Floodwood might not be open since this is a mim maintenance road and also in Lake County the Stoney River Rd as of Dec 28th was not plowed out. Also in Lake Co. FR 11/CR 15 is being used regularly by several types of hauling trucks which are hauling ore (?) back and forth from Hoyt Lakes to Silver Bay. So watch out for them and use the shoulder of the road to park if you are up here viewing owls.
