The Minn Birding Weekends (MBW) group turned up a few northern owls this weekend (Jan 2-3) in NE Minn, some of which appear to be new individuals not previously reported:

- N Hawk Owl Jan 2 in Sax-Zim Bog along Kolu Rd, which is the east- west road between McDavitt and Admiral roads, 1/2 mi N of Sax Rd

- N Hawk Owl Jan 3 in Lake Co, along Stoney River Forest Rd, 8.6 mi S of Hwy 1; this same individual was found on the Jan 2 Isabella CBC by Jim Lind and others

- Great Gray Owl Jan 3 along Lake Co Rd 2, at the RR crossing ~38 mi N of Two Harbors; this may be the same owl previously seen by others 1 mi S of here

- 2 Great Grays Jan 3 along Stoney River Forest Rd: at 3.6 mi and 6.4 mi S of Hwy 1; either or both of these may have been seen Jan 2 by Jim Lind et al, who saw Great Grays at 4 spots along this road, although they were at different locations

- Snowy Owl Jan 2 on the bay ice between the Park Point Recreation Area and just N of Barker's Island; this is probably the same owl reported near here a few days ago

In addition to the rarities already reported by others this weekend, the MBW group also saw a late Sharp-shinned Hawk on Park Point at 19th St, a Merlin at the corner of Superior St and Lester River Rd, and a small flock of Bohemian Waxwings at 6219 E Superior St.
