A total of 30 species and 1,144 birds were counted during the Rice Lake
National Wildlife Refuge Christmas Bird Count on December 26, 2009. Five
brave observers braved the ice and snow to participate, traveling from the
Twin Cities, Princeton and Aitkin. A special thank you to all the folks in
McGregor and surrounding area residents that greeted us with holiday wishes
and graciously allowed us to watch their bird feeders. Thanks to the 3
feeder counters that called in their counts. With their help, we added
several more species to the count. Highlights included a Hoary Redpoll and
small flocks of Red Crossbills, White-winged Crossbills and Bohemian
Waxwings. The Rice Lake National Wildlife Refuge Christmas Bird Count was
done in conjunction with The National Audubon Society with support from the
Friends of Rice Lake Refuge. Christmas Bird Counts are done across North
America between the dates of December 14 and January 5. The count is
designed to monitor the status and distribution of bird populations across
the Western Hemisphere.
