Out guiding today:  1/14/2010

Highlights: Lake County 7:30am - 10:00am

At 8:00am a female Spruce Grouse was seen on the Stoney River Rd just a tenth 
of a mile north of the Whyte Rd intersection with the Stoney River Rd.

Sax-Zim Bog Highlights  11:00am to 3:00pm

Admiral Rd Feeder ( 3.7 miles north of CR 28 ):Boreal Chickadee
Arkola Rd Feeder:  Pine Grosbeak and a Long-tailed Weasel eating meat off the 
deer rib carcass. Got a decent photos( check out my recent blog post to see the 
weasel)
McDavitt Rd Feeder:  Purple Finches and Gray Jays.  For those who never been 
there the feeder cannot be seen from the road.  From Sax Rd ( CR 28 ) go 2.4 
miles and there is a logging corridor on the east side of the road with a well 
packed down foot path to the feeder.  On the west side of the road is a large 
recent logged out area.  Walk on the foot path for about 100 yards and the 
feeders will be on the north side of the foot path.
County Road 7 near Byrne's Green House: 2 Snow Buntings along the road

Hawk Owls Sightings

Nichols Lake Rd ( CR 232 ) about 2 miles east of CR 7 a new Hawk Owl sighting 
for the bog!  We also saw two Hawk Owls near each other on CR 7. From CR 7 & CR 
28 go north on CR 7 to first woodlot on east side an owl was perched high in 
the decidous trees and 2nd owl was perched in the next wood lot on the north 
side of the power line corridor.

Duluth Highlights: 4pm  

-Canal Park break wall:  Iceland Gull ( 1st cycle )

 Highlights: 1/13/10

Sax-Zim Bog 

McDavitt Rd: From CR 28 about 1.5 miles north.  When you cross over the RR 
tracks on the McDavitt Rd the first open bog on the west side a Hawk Owl was 
perched in a tamarack at sunset near the road.  So there are now 4 Hawk Owls in 
the Sax Zim Bog area.

 Highlights 1/11/10

Aitkin County:

On CR 16 ( Kestrel ) about a 1/4 mile south a large flock of Snow Buntings.  
On CR 5 just south of Palisade saw a Hawk Owl and another Hawk Owl near the 
intersection of CR 18.  
On CR 18 saw another Hawk Owl about 4 miles west of CR 5 intersection and 
another Hawk Owl at the intersection of CR 18 and Hwy 169

At the intersection of CR 5 and CR 18 Patsy Bailey birder in my group spotted 4 
Sharp-tailed Grouse feeding on the alders on the north side of the intersection.
