I have an ipod touch, no phone, no G3 network and I don't know if this app works with non ipod type of devices. However, I have been using iBird Explorer Plus for 2 years and find it to be very rewarding. It costs about the same as a field guide and works without internet. I can hear bird calls in the field wherever I am (even in Sax Zim Bog or the everglades of Florida.) The Plus includes the ability to create lists and more dynamic internet capabilities when you get to a place that gives access to the internet. The photos included in the guide are indispensable when trying to id tricky winter birds. This is the only app that I have spent money on and it was worth every cent.
