Jeff Stephenson, Chuck Krulas and I wandered around the Sax-Zim area today and found three Northern Hawk Owls. One was along the Stone Lake Road (about 3pm) about a mile east of Hwy 7 (a previously noted location) and two further south on Hwy 7 down by the Nichols Lake Road area - one was on Hwy 7 approximately 1.3 miles north of Hwy 133 and the other was just a short distance west of Hwy 7 on Hwy 133 (just before noon). Although we drove along all of the roads where other Hawk Owls had been reported in the past month we didn’t spot any additional Hawk Owls. We also did not find any Great Gray Owls in the Sax-Zim area
We had Evening Grosbeaks at the Abrahamson feeders near Meadowlands as well as a male Northern Cardinal (my first in the Sax-Zim area). Pine Grosbeaks were seen at some feeder stops, as were very small quantities of Common Redpolls. We located the Boreal Chickadee that has been at the Admiral Road feeders and we found Gray Jays and White-winged Crossbills at a few locations along our route. We looked for Black-backed Woodpecker at the location on McDavitt Road but were not successful. We also couldn’t come up with any Sharp-tailed Grouse or Black-billed Magpies.
