129 species were tallied on Saturday night for the 35th annual Salt Lake weekend. Well below last year's count but better then expected considering the very odd and poor migration it has been out here. The rain and wind helped ground some migrants. 18 shorebird species were seen and 9 of those were first arrivals that were absent in many of the same locations the day prior. Pectoral Sandpiper numbers increased at least 10 fold from Friday to Saturday. Notables on Saturday: 2 Smith's Longspurs at Plover Prairie East Unit. American Golden-Plovers were seen in several locations with the largest group being 40 birds. Short-eared Owl at the Prairie Marsh farm. Cattle Egret on Hwy 75, 2 miles north of Madison. Single Greater Prairie-Chicken at Plover Prairie. A possible Prairie Falcon seen roughly 4-5 miles NW of Madison. Notable Friday birds: 15 White-faced Ibis at the Big Stone NWR. Ferruginous Hawk along Hwy 40 about a mile before crossing over into Chippewa County. 2 American Avocets a mile east of Barry, Big Stone county. Otherwise there were few migrant passerines (handfull of Yellow-rumpeds and one Orange-crowned were the only warblers) and low waterfowl numbers. Raptors were scarce as they have been all spring. Few early arrivals were seen but there were a surprising number of lingering species given the warm spring that often are missed on the count: Common Merganser and Goldeneye, Tundra and Trumpeter Swans, Sandhill Crane, Fox Sparrow, Juncos, hundreds of Lapland Longspurs the past several days, and Rusty Blackbird.
