I don't normally post on the MOU net as I mostly bird in Wisconsin, but I was
at
Trempealeau wildfowl refuge on the Wisconsin side of the river and saw a scoter
from
Kiep's Island. It was part way across the river and could have been in
Minnesota. It was a
male scoter with an orange bill. I have seen all three scoters a number of
times on the
coasts and they are not always easy to identify at a distance although the
first impression
was of a black scoter. I thought I glimpsed a bit of white on the nape though.
I was using
binoculars and didn't have my scope so my view was limited. John Betton
