The Common Loon returned to Detroit Lakes, MN and area lakes
Saturday, April 3.
According to Charlie Walcott of Cornell University, the male loon selects
the nest site. When breeding territories are founded on lakes, an intruding
female will force the displaced female to an adjacent lake, while an
intruding male will kill the resident male 30 percent of the time. Walcott
will be exploring loon vocalizations as well as Why Birds Sing at the 13th
annual Festival of Birds in Detroit Lakes, May 20-23. Other presenters
include Carrol Henderson on How Birds Fly, Mike Murphy on Secrets of
Migration, the Art of Birds with Joe Hautman, and the Songs of Birds with
Jeff Gordon. Plus, 11 fieldtrips. More at
