Nate & I co-led yesterday's Sherburne Refuge trip (with optional afternoon Mille Lacs County portion). Nearly 30 birders came, enjoying 127 species on Mahnomen Trail, Blue Hill Trail, Prairie Wildlife Auto Tour (all in the refuge), west side of Mille Lacs Lake and Kathio State Park. Highlights were:

* Cerulean Warbler (among 18 warbler species, consistent sightings/hearings (but not with the waves of past years)). It was singing a variant song on the actual hill of Blue Hill Trail, along the trial that leads upwards to the viewing platform.

* 12 shorebird species (including both dowitchers and Wilson's Phalarope), all found on the Auto Tour, drawn down pond just before the well-known eagle's nest.

* 11 sparrow species, including good looks at a Harris'.

Many thanks to all who attended, the fellowship was as good as the birding.

PS Thanks as well to those who have expressed concern and/or are praying for Nate. He did suffer a grand mal seizure early this morning, spent a couple of hours in ER, but is home & resting comfortably. We are looking forward to the final diagnosis (type of epilepsy) and resolution of this situation, hopefully before he heads to college.
