To update the information on today's warbler fallout in the fog at
Park Point....
When I left there around 5:15 pm, the warbler total had reached 25
species. I found a female Black-throated Blue in the wooded dunes on
the lake side of the Point about half way between the Recreation Area
and the 43rd St bus turn-around. And Doug hiked out beyond the airport
to the stand of tall pines to find Pine Warbler (a pair or two nest
there annually). Otherwise, no Pine Warblers were found in the wave of
migrants; contrary to the belief of many birders, this species is not
to be expected in May warbler waves.
Of the 26 warbler species which are annual migrants in Duluth, the
only other species not seen was Golden-winged, although the other
observers there might find this or something else of note later today.
The single best location today was at the N end of Southworth Marsh.
In just a half hour period there around noon, I saw 18 species within
~50 yards or so of the sign.
The most common species today were Chestnut-sided, Magnolia,
Blackpoll, Am Redstart, and Wilson's; there were also good numbers of
Tennessees, Cape Mays, and Bay-breasteds. I also heard/saw at least 5
or 6 Connecticuts.
If the fog persists overnight into the morning, Tuesday could be
equally good for warblers at Park Point, if not better.

Doug Kieser just called to have me post that both he and Kim Eckert
are experiencing a huge Warbler fallout on Park Point in Duluth -
St. Louis County. They have seen 23 species of Warblers so far
between South Worth Marsh and the Sky Harbor Airport. There are
large numbers of each Warbler, and Doug said it was amazing since
most were low and easily seen due to the weather. At the time they
had not seen Golden-winged or Black-throated Blue yet!
