Well while walking the dogs in the Minnehaha Dog Park in the Metro area yesterday we were saddened to discover a dead baby/young pileated. The good news is they are nesting there and obvously had a successful nest. There were no clear signs as to why it had died. We think we figured out which hole in the tree the nest was/is in, but didn't have binocs with us, so we were unsure if there were other babies in there or not. The wings did not seem developed enough for it to have fledged yet, but it is hard to tell.
