Last Monday evening, 28 June, a Great Gray Owl and Yellow Rails were relocated in Aitkin Co. The Great Gray was hunting just before sunset along the snowmobile trail/2-track road about 3/4 mile S of CR 18, where there were earlier sightings this month. This trail/road (which we walked; it might be passable in a regular passenger car) is opposite Pietz's Rd or 320th Place, which is 2 mi W of CR 5 or 4 mi E of US Hwy 169.

At 11:00-11:30 pm, Yellow Rails were heard in the McGregor Marsh along the E side of MN Hwy 65, 0.8 mi S of MN Hwy 210. One individual was calling continually and could easy be heard from the road; 1 or 2 others farther from the road could also be heard intermittently. Because there is a deep, water-filled ditch along the highway, seeing these rails would involve at least a 1/2-mile round-trip hike in the marsh from the Soo Line ATV Trail, which crosses Hwy 65 a mile S of Hwy 210. Earlier in June there were apparently more rails calling in this area, some of them closer to the ATV trail.

We also listened for Whip-poor-wills NE of Palisade along CR 10 and 280th Ave, where some had been reported recently, but none were heard.
