Spent three nights camping at Finland State Forest campgorund and exploring the
state parks. 6-27 through 6-30. 40 species of birds, 8 warblers. Most
notably I heard a sandhill crane on the morning of 6-28 east of my camp. It
sounded like it was on the ground as opposed to flying by. I heard it call
several times over approximately one minute and it didn't appear to change
locations. I missed the black-throated blue at Tettegouche Camp. As we were
sitting on the top of the overlook I thought I heard something over the squeals
of my kids that sounded different than the hermit thrush and oven bird that
were singing constantly. I told everybody to be quiet and listen because I
thought I might have heard the warbler. My three year old daughter wrinkled
her nose and whispered to her mom, "I think it was just a hermit thrush." I
didn't get the black-throated blue, but I was proud as a peacock. The kids'
favorite was a hen ruffed grouse with a brood of younguns. They liked the ten
foot views. Other favorites were the snowshoe hares and red squirrels.
