Field Trip Report
July 11, 12, 13, 2010
Western Minnesota Birds
Had a change of location for this field trip and spent 3 days in and around
Marshall, Minnesota. Our group observed a total of 105 species of birds in
Lincoln, Lyon and Yellow Medicine counties. Fall migration was evident with
Nine species of Shorebirds observed and lots of Swallows were observed along
power lines and fences. Many nesting species were observed as well, including
my favorite. A newly fledged Yellow-headed Blackbird.
Here are a few of the species we observed:
Trumpeter Swan - Lyon County - Minneota Sewage Ponds
Gray Partridge - Lyon County - CR 24 and 180 Avenue.
Wild Turkey - Lyon County - Camden State Park - Two adults and 6 young Wild
Turkeys were observed near the lower campground.
Lincoln County - 280th Street, 1/2 mile West of the
Lincoln/Lyon county line.
Least Bittern - Lyon County - Black Rush WPA - Three were heard and one was
observed.
Cooper's Hawk - Lyon County - Vallers WMA
Shorebirds - Nine species - Locations:
Lyon County - Highway 59 - About 1.5 miles South of the intersection of Highway
59 and Highway 23. East side of Highway 59, behind the large
Grain elevators.
- Vallers WMA, 235th Avenue and 350th Street.
Yellow Medicine County - CR 15 - Not many birds, but there were a number of
flooded fields along CR 15.
Eurasian Collared-Dove - Taunton - Highway 68 and Garfield street, near the
grain elevators - Three birds observed.
Western Kingbird - Yellow Medicine county - 4 locations.
Loggerhead Shrike - Yellow Medicine county - CR 15, 1/4 mile North of Highway
68.
Scarlet Tanager - Lyon County - Garvin Park
Northern Cardinal - Lyon County - Garvin Park
Dickcissel - All three Counties, with the most observed in Yellow Medicine
county.
Orchard Oriole - All three Counties - in many locations.
