Bob Janssen and I hosted a three day sparrow workshop this last weekend. During the workshop we saw 13 species of sparrows and a total weekend bird list of 80. These were great numbers when you consider the record breaking hot weather. I think the best sparrow of the entire workshop was good long killer looks at LeConte's - lots of folks even got wonderful photos of this guy. The peak migration period for this species was the previous week when over 20 LeConte's sparrows were found in one small patch of grassland, but we were still able to find them everyday of the workshop. The best bird of the weekend, while not a big deal to MN birders was the Pileated Woodpecker up on the Prairie Choteau in the woods around Labolt Dam in South Dakota. This is the extreme western range of this bird and totally NOT expected up on the prairie.
