There are around 8000 cranes hanging out in the Grantsburg area: split
between Crex and Fish Lake. They spend the day feeding in the farm fields,
especially south and east of Grantsburg. Pretty spectacular sight to see
them fly in to roost in the evening.

Subject: [mou-net] thousands of sandhill cranes in Pine County, MN
Around 8:30 this morning, my friend and I were driving on State Hwy 70
about 5 mi west of I-35 when we noticed numerous flocks of sandhills
flying from the southeast to the northwest. We stopped on a side road
and watched as flocks of 10 - 50 continued passing overhead for about
the next 20 min. I estimated we saw about 3,000 cranes. What an
awesome sight and sound!
We drove north about 2 mi on Pine Co Hwy 3 and got good looks at a
couple hundred cranes feeding in open fields. Later we talked with
refuge volunteers at Crex Meadows, who said that the cranes we saw
had probably roosted at Fish Lake WMA, southwest of Grantsburg, WI.
They said a similar number has been roosting at Crex Meadows, and
they usually feed in the fields southeast of Grantsburg.
