Thanks to all those who posted and re-posted the Townsend's Solitaire.
After seeing Erik Collins post this morning, we made a quick detour
from an errand and stopped to see the bird around 1 PM.
It was about 30 yards south of the 4th green wastebasket, starting
from the parking lot off CR F and heading south. As mentioned earlier,
it was in the cedars on the west side of the road. We missed it on our
first pass, as the foliage was easily thick enough to hide it, but on
the return walk, it was out in the open on low branches, about
eye-height, cocking its head to choose from the plentiful blue berries
to eat.
It seemed unperturbed by our close proximity, giving us long, clear
looks at its prominent eye-ring, the white edging on some of its
feathers, the relatively lengthy tail, and the peachy-buff patches on
its wings. At one point it opened its beak in either an inaudible note
or a yawn, showing a bright pink mouth and tongue. It certainly looked
well-fed and relaxed.
