We have witnessed this interaction only once before, and it's
fascinating.
We watched a young Sharp-shinned Hawk repeatedly harassing the
somewhat larger-sized Pileated Woodpecker. The hawk would post itself
higher in a tree, and each time the Pileated relocated, the hawk
would attack. The Pileated vocalized loudly when it flew and when on
tree trunks would repeatedly flash its wings showing lots of white.
We observed this for about five minutes until the Pileated (with the
hawk in pursuit) flew out of vision.
We were entertained. The Sharpie looked frustrated. The Pileated was
not amused.
Additionally: a flock of about 60 Pine Siskins invaded our yard
yesterday.
