Thanks to all of you who replied regarding my mystery mallard. The consensus is that it is a domestic-wild hybrid, and there is a history of it being in the area. 10000birds.com has a great selection of hybrid mallard photos, that I was referred to. Possibly a Duclair's (domestic) hybrid.
