Mongolia and the Golden Eagle Festival With Ron Winch and Toni Meglitsch , photographers The Golden Eagle Festival in northwestern Mongolia has revived the ancient tradition of hunting with these giant raptors, a Kazakh tradition that nearly died out in recent times. Photographers Ron Winch and Toni Meglitsch traveled to the three-day festival and brought away extraordinary photos and amazing tales of this awe-inspiring event. Spectators come from around the world to watch mounted hunters compete in riding and hunting events with their giant birds near the town of Ulgi. “We had first class lodgings in a ger camp where the toilet was a hole in the ground, nighttime temperatures dipped into the 20-degree range and tea water was dipped from the river and boiled,” says Winch. Come hear Ron and Toni’s fascinating stories and view their stunning images from this little-known event. Everyone is invited to this free Saint Paul Audubon program on Thursday, December 9 at 7:00 p.m. at Fairview Community Center, 1910 West County Road B in Roseville, just west of Fairview Avenue. The event is open to the public, with free parking. A social time with refreshments begins at 6:45.
