While out guiding a friend around Sax-Zim Bog today, we had some very fun
sightings! The highlight was a beautiful NORTHERN HAWK OWL (photos to come
later). While observing that beautiful & slender owl, we got to see it preen
its wings, and even triangulate a few times (rocking/positioning its head
back and forth). We witnessed a total of 3 NORTHERN SHRIKES between our
visiting time of 7:30am and 12:30pm. Other highlights include 5 COMMON
REDPOLLS, 3 PILEATED WOODPECKERS, 1 GRAY JAY, several BLUE JAYS, 1 RUFFED
GROUSE and a few handfulls of cute BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES flitting around
throughout the bog, despite the cold temperatures. It was a very fun day to
be out, and the sunrise this morning within the bog lit up all of
snow-covered tree edges. These edges of the trees glowed a cotton-candy pink
against the lavender-blue skies. Quite a site to see :)

Good birding,
