Here is an email forwarded from Julie O' Connor regarding volunteer owl surveys! I have done these volunteer surveys in the past, and they are a lot of fun...
Spring is on its way! Before things get too busy with spring migration, though, the Western Great Lakes Spring Owl Monitoring Project ( http://www.hawkridge.org/research/springowl.html) sends volunteers out across the state to listen for, and report, calling owls. YOU can be part of the action this year, as we are seeking new volunteers for the program. Owl routes are 9 miles long, follow a pre-determined path, and take approximately 90 minutes to complete. You are asked to stop at one mile intervals and listen quietly for 5 minutes, then record any owls that you hear calling during that time. Volunteers survey their route ONE time between April 1 and April 15. We have routes all over the state of Minnesota, primarily in the southern and western quadrants of the state. Routes within an hour of Duluth and the Metro areas are filled--too many willing volunteers, not enough routes for everyone! If you are interested in signing up for this project, please send me the following information: 1. Your full name 2. Your mailing address and phone number 3. The county in which you live (or where you will be during April 1-15, 2011) 4. How many miles you are willing to drive to the start of a route 5. How many routes you would be willing to cover (each route takes approximately 1:20 to complete) *DO NOT REPLY TO THIS EMAIL.* Please send your response to [email protected]. I hope you'll join us on this fun project -- our volunteers LOVE their owl-prowl evenings!
