Subject: Keweenaw Raptor Survey- Spring 2011
Greetings!
The Keweenaw Raptor Survey is gearing up to start our second season of field
work at Brockway Mountain near the village of Copper Harbor in northern
Keweenaw County, Michigan. The count starts just next week on March 15th,
despite Brockway currently being only accessible by snowmobile or
skiing/snowshoes.
Arthur Green from the Chestnut Ridge Hawk Count in New York has been hired
to count this spring. You can follow the season's progress at our blog
postings at www.KeweenawRaptorSurvey.org as well as count data at
www.HawkCount.org
Of course, we strongly encourage a visit to Brockway Mountain, the spring
raptor flights can be amazing. In our inaugural season last year, just under
10,000 raptors were counted including Golden Eagles, Northern Goshawks,
Rough-legged Hawks and several Swainson's Hawks! A significant Canada Goose
and Common Loon migration was also recorded, and rarities found locally
include McCown's Longspur and Mountain Bluebird!
The Keweenaw Raptor Survey is completely funded by grants and donations from
raptor-count enthusiasts such as all of you. Many thanks to all who have
