Perhaps of interest, a rare find for Stearns County yesterday while deep in the
St. Wendel Tamarack Bog SNA:1st heard vocalizing the deep croak and higher
pitched squawk, soon after sighted. Perhaps the same individual FGo seen two
weeks ago ~5miles north near Opole. If you go after this sighting I would
suggest stopping for a bit every so often to listen, circling the perimeter
roads N of St. Joseph with CR 3 along the west, CR 4 along the north and east.
Loop further out on roads to other tamarack bog spots toward the St. Stephen
area.
As for snowshoeing in the bog, harder to get in there from the wet-ice fringe,
easier once inside, though snow
is mushing down fast. Lots of Eastern Bluebirds flying over the bog and
Red-Shoulder Hawks calling out while circling it.
Earlier in the day, sighted a Ross's Goose flying with seven Canada Geese
(going toward the Rockville-ColdSpring area)
Several FOY ducks showing up at Clearwater Narrows.
American Woodcocks peenting at SJU tonight. mjb
