The majority of the Tundra Swans departed Carver County last night. I counted
597 this morning, but 1/3 of those were migrating over: 300 Cty. Rd. 51, 156 in
4 flocks migrating over Rapids Lake(heard a 5th flock), 50 migrating over Lake
Waconia, 47 150th St., 26 Cty. Rd. 33, and 18 Salem Ave. Other waterfowl this
morning were Cackling Goose, Canada Goose, Trumpeter Swan, Wood Duck, Mallard,
Canvasback(fewer of these), Ring-necked Duck, Greater Scaup, Lesser Scaup,
Bufflehead, Hooded Merganser, Common Merganser, Red-breasted Merganser,
Pied-billed Grebe, and American Coot. There were 37 Bald Eagles at Rapids
Lake MVNWR, 34 around and on the remaining ice of the nearly ice-free Rapids
Lake and 3 along the Minnesota River. Other birds seen this morning were 3
Double-crested Cormorant, 3 Great Blue Heron, 2 male Norther Harriers, American
Kestrel, Killdeer, Bluebird, 2 Meadowlark(near last year's Western location but
neither were singing and didn't get great looks at them), and one massive
blackbird flock of mainly Red-winged and Grackle but also had a few Rusty and a
Cowbird mixed in.
