This is the Duluth Birding Report for May 12th, 2011 sponsored by the
Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

A HARLEQUIN DUCK was found by Jan Kraemer on the 11th at Brighton Beach
in east Duluth. Peder Svingen found two RED-THROATED LOONS on the 12th
on Lake Superior at the Park Point recreation area. Peder relocated the
immature GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL on the Minnesota side of Wisconsin
Point on the 7th. He saw a THAYER'S GULL and two GLAUCOUS GULLS there on
the 11th.

A SUMMER TANAGER was seen on the 12th at a private residence in the
Lakeside neighborhood of Duluth, and another was photographed during the
past week near the UMD campus. Frank Berdan found a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD
on the 9th along Scenic Highway 61 about 0.25 mile west of the McQuade
Road, and Don Kienholz found one on the 11th at Leif Erikson Park in
Duluth.

Jan Green saw an EASTERN TOWHEE on the 12th along the Old North Shore
Road in Duluth Township, and she saw a BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER there
earlier in the week. A YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was seen on the 12th on
the 300 block of 2nd Avenue in Two Harbors.

New arrivals in the area during the past week include GREEN HERON,
COMMON TERN, WHIP-POOR-WILL, COMMON NIGHTHAWK, RUBY-THROATED
HUMMINGBIRD, CHIMNEY SWIFT, LEAST FLYCATCHER, BLUE-HEADED VIREO,
NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW, BANK SWALLOW, CLIFF SWALLOW, HOUSE WREN,
VEERY, WOOD THRUSH, TENNESSEE WARBLER, NASHVILLE WARBLER, NORTHERN
PARULA, YELLOW WARBLER, CAPE MAY WARBLER, MAGNOLIA WARBLER, BLACKPOLL
WARBLER, AMERICAN REDSTART, WILSON'S WARBLER, SCARLET TANAGER,
ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, HARRIS’S SPARROW, and BALTIMORE ORIOLE.
