A total of 15 recently hatched ducks jumped from their nest box into Red Rock Lake (Hennepin County) this afternoon while I was talking to the air conditioner repair guy out back. From the photo I took of the Hooded Merganser mom swimming off with the brood in tow, it looked like one or two of the youngsters could have been Wood Ducks. In fact, four adult Wood Ducks (only one a female) were in the water facing the nest box from only a few yards away about an hour before the free falls began -- as if they knew.
